This herping tour brought us face to face with two remarkable venomous snakes. The highlight was Calloselasma rhodostoma, the Malayan Pit Viper, with one individual displaying a particularly dark coloration while another was spotted in a much lighter shade, showcasing the species’ impressive variation. We also encountered the monocled cobra (Naja kaouthia), adding another striking predator to the night’s sightings. Alongside these encounters, a variety of other nocturnal wildlife made the expedition even more memorable.

Binh Thuan’s warm landscapes offer a different setting for nocturnal wildlife encounters, where both stealthy hunters and active climbers can be found after dark. This trip featured the White-lipped Pit Viper (Trimeresurus albolabris), recognizable by its vivid green coloration and contrasting pale lip scales, alongside the Copperhead Racer (Coelognathus radiatus), a fast-moving snake known for its distinctive dark radiating stripes. Despite their different appearances and hunting styles, both species demonstrate how well snakes adapt to their surroundings. These encounters offered another exciting look at the reptile diversity found across southern Vietnam.
